Eliminating vibration with the ARRI ALEXA 35 on Steadicam®: rigid mounting plate options to bypass the dovetail system
What the thread found
- Worn ARRI dovetail plates exhibit visible play between dovetail and ARRI bridge plate, which produces vibration during zooming operations; several operators have confirmed occasional vibration issues on the ALEXA 35.
- One option is the small ARRI front plate (part number K2.0034179) mounted directly under the camera, to which a Steadicam® plate can be attached.
- The Apex plate slides under the camera with the Steadicam® plate bolted to it, though it still routes through the dovetail system.
- A BUD plate is available if the camera has a BUD clamp on its underside.
- Gimbal base plates with 3/8-inch threads mounted directly under the camera accommodate both MAP-2 and similar plates.
- The railway plate system (cam-jam) was mentioned as a vibration solution.
- One operator built a custom bracket fitted to the two rear threaded holes on the ALEXA 35 rear plate, dimensioned to connect with an Apex plate.
Depends on
- Solutions depend on camera bottom mount configuration and existing wear on dovetail components.
- Custom fabrication requires machine shop access and knowledge of ALEXA 35 threading specifications.
