Recentering a GPI PRO Gimbal after Volt conversion: counterweight adjustment and trunnion selection.
DisputedParticipants disagreed and reached no conclusion. Read the findings as positions, not as an answer.
What the thread found
- First remove the Volt and check whether the gimbal is centered without it; most centering issues stem from counterweight imbalance.
- Adding or repositioning counterweights at the trunnion pulley addresses approximately 90 percent of centering problems, with minimal adjustment needed at the outer pan housing; shim washers between counterweight and Volt side can help balance mass.
- Volt kits include additional trunnions that differ only by a few thousandths of an inch in length; swapping trunnions can recenter the gimbal without external service, and manufacturer documentation and community guides are available for this procedure.
- Shimming works but may compromise the fit of the Volt arm (Hockey Stick); one manufacturer flagged user shimming as a warranty issue.
- Complete neutral balance is often avoided in practice; operators report a 6-second fall time is more workable because lens glass shifts during focus, and fully neutral balance caused increased Volt orientation errors in one case.
- Improper pan bearing installation is another possible cause of centering drift.
Depends on
- Whether the gimbal was centered before Volt installation
- Camera weight and lens configuration
- Disputed: self-centering versus returning to manufacturer; disputed whether counterweight/trunnion issues or misaligned pan bearing is the primary cause
