Modifying a BFD cable to work with Steadicam Archer stage using 3-pin LEMO connector
17 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- A 2-pin LEMO cable can be adapted to a 3-pin LEMO by replacing the connector, as the original cable only carries two active signals to pins 2 and 3.
- Pin assignments on the Archer 3-pin LEMO connector are: pin 1 = ground, pin 2 = +12V, pin 3 = +24V.
- Focus motor cables up to 5 feet long have been used successfully, but cable length performance depends on the specific conductor material used.
- Using improper cable materials can cause audible issues like constant ringing sounds in the motor, even on relatively short cables around 2 feet.
- When wiring a male LEMO connector to match a female connector on the stage, the pin orientation must account for whether you are viewing from the contact side or solder side, but referencing the painted line indicating pin 1 on the connector body eliminates ambiguity.
- Cable length around 260mm provides practical working distance between motor and stage without excessive slack.
Depends on
- The thread assumes the Archer uses the same connector type as the Flyer LE, but this was not independently verified by all participants.
- Cable material specifications from manufacturers like ARRI versus alternatives like Mogami can affect performance, but no comprehensive testing data was presented.
- Confusion about pin orientation between solder side and contact side perspectives suggests the specific connector body markings should be consulted rather than relying on diagrams alone.
