Operating an ARRI 16SR3 16mm film camera on Steadicam®: grounding, video taps, balance shifts, and mounting options.

What the thread found

  • Ground loops can corrupt the video signal to noise ('hash') when the camera starts, even if the probe looked clean; the solution is to power the camera from its onboard battery and feed the video tap separately, or use sleds with separate power supplies for camera and accessories.
  • Older SD video taps require an up-converter (component or SD to HD-SDI) or a monitor/transmitter capable of SD input; single-stage devices that both convert and upscale are rare, and the Decimator handles only one function; many rental film cameras now have HD taps.
  • The 16SR3 requires 24 V power; side balance must be adjusted after every take because the center of gravity shifts as film is consumed.
  • Standard camera plates designed for the SR mount also fit the 416 and some Aaton models and are worth including in the kit; the camera can fly inverted if the magazine is additionally secured; mounting to the camera's handle works but may rattle depending on play in the grip—warn the DP.
  • SR cameras balance well on Steadicam®; mount the video transmitter to the lower box; an ALEXA Mini handle mounted on top of the SR provides additional attachment points.
  • The Low-Mode Tilt Kit for SR I/II replaces the handle completely.

Depends on

  • Grounding depends on power supply architecture (onboard battery vs. external)
  • Balance shifts with film consumption and require re-adjustment per take
  • Video tap compatibility depends on camera model and available monitor/transmitter specs
