Docking collar slipping on camera post due to tolerance mismatch
12 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- A docking collar can slip down a post over time under camera weight even when measured dimensions suggest the fit should be adequate.
- Different collar variants from the same manufacturer may have inconsistent tolerances, making some units tighter or looser than others.
- A split collar design with two independent screws on each side can provide more even clamping pressure than a single-hinge design.
- Roughening the post surface with sandpaper can improve collar grip by increasing friction.
- A collar with a stop pin can serve as a safety mechanism to prevent the locking ring from shifting.
- Older split collar designs with dual screws may offer better holding performance than newer hinged variants.
Depends on
- This issue was specific to a particular user's setup with an XCS post and Jerry Hill Balancing Bracket combination.
- The solution involved obtaining a different collar model rather than a universal fix for the existing collar.
- The sandpaper roughening approach was suggested but not confirmed as solving the original problem.
- No testing was done to verify whether baby oil contamination actually contributed to the slipping.
