Options for rotating a camera up to 90 degrees on top of a Steadicam for broadcast production
What the thread found
- An AR cage modified with a simple carbon fiber roll structure can sit on any Steadicam model and connect to a Preston MDR Zoom port for power, with rotation controlled remotely via a Microforce unit.
- The Letus Helix single axis rotation tool has significant play and stability issues, with a lens moving up and down by approximately 5mm during operation on heavier cameras.
- An AR cage requires the camera to be centered within the cage and the entire sled to be neutrally balanced across all axes for reliable rotation without fighting the equipment.
- Operating a camera rotating to 90 or 180 degrees benefits from a second monitor positioned perpendicular to the main monitor to maintain proper framing reference.
- A Chapman Miniscope with a 7 foot telescope boom range and 3 axis remote head can mount onto a Hybrid dolly and work in tight spaces with a full camera package.
- An AR cage can be modified with new electronics to enable wireless remote control of roll adjustment over the top of horizon stabilization.
Depends on
- The AR cage approach requires holding the sled firmly during camera rotation and will never achieve perfect balance.
- The Letus Helix performed poorly with heavier camera bodies.
- The Chapman Miniscope option may introduce more complexity than desired for the specific production requirements.
- Modifications to AR cages and remote control systems vary by individual implementer and availability may be limited.
