Weight plate system for cinema camera sleds to enable shorter posts and improved balance
17 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- A dovetail-mounted weight plate system allows operators to add 0.8 to 1.65 pounds of additional weight to the bottom of cinema sleds, enabling the use of shorter posts while maintaining balance.
- The weight plate can be positioned anywhere within a 5-inch range along the dovetail for fine-tuning balance characteristics.
- The system was developed through 7 months of prototyping and testing before public release.
- Adding weight to the sled bottom permits extended top posts in low-mode operation without extending bottom posts.
- The weight plate can be tapped to accept a 3/8-inch 16-thread gyroscope mount.
- Battery plate variations with pre-drilled holes for IDX or Anton Bauer batteries allow operators to use battery weight as functional counterbalance.
- The base aluminum plate weighs approximately 1.0 pound and remains functional without additional weight plates for lighter balance needs.
Depends on
- Designed specifically for Tiffen full-size sleds with dovetail bottoms (Ultra2, Original Ultra Cine series, Vector, Clipper series).
- User experience limited to main weight plate and weight number one; weights two and three were not extensively field-tested by the reviewer.
- Practical benefit noted primarily for professional aerial and motion control work rather than consumer-level productions.
