21 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
DisputedParticipants disagreed and reached no conclusion. Read the findings as positions, not as an answer.
What the thread found
- The Pro arm has been proven reliable over many years of use with excellent long-term durability and quality service.
- The Geo series arms feature significantly lighter weight construction, with the G-50 weighing approximately 8 pounds and the G-70 over 10 pounds, compared to heavier traditional arms.
- The G-50 and G-70 arms offer adjustable Geo and Ride control features that can be modified without tools to dramatically change the arm's behavior and responsiveness.
- The G-50 provides an exceptionally wide boom range of 32 inches with smooth operation throughout and no perceptible shifts in dynamic behavior at the range endpoints.
- The Geo series arms feature a smaller physical profile compared to the Pro arm.
- Both the Pro and Geo series arms are capable of handling various camera formats and weights without being a limiting factor in operation.
- The Pro arm requires changing canisters to adjust load ranges, whereas the Geo series offers more flexible adjustment options.
- Operator skill remains the primary determinant of Steadicam performance regardless of which arm model is used.
- The G-50 arm was priced at $9,950 with a standard steel interface, or $10,600 with a titanium no-tools connector, while Pro arms cost significantly more at approximately $20,000.
Depends on
- Hands-on experience with both arms was limited to brief demonstrations at trade shows for some participants.
- Limited long-term operational experience with the G-70 at the time of discussion, as it was still under testing and had not yet been released.
- Direct performance comparison between Pro and Geo arms was not possible for all participants due to limited trial opportunities.
- The G-70 price had not been finalized at the time of these discussions.
