Supporting the ARRI 435 camera in Steadicam low mode configuration
17 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- The 100% video top is a specialized mounting interface that replaces the camera's normal optic block and provides a built-in plate for attaching a Steadicam plate, making it the preferred option for low mode work.
- The Hill bracket is an alternative solution for low mode operation when a video top is unavailable.
- Steadicam magazines are required when using a Hill bracket because standard 435 magazines will physically contact the bracket and prevent the sled from being set into low mode.
- If Steadicam magazines are not available, the camera can be flown upside down and the image can be flipped in post-production.
- CP brand cages can accommodate a 435 camera with normal magazines and viewfinder attached, though magazine changes become more difficult in this configuration.
- Baer-Bel cages have been modified to fit 435 cameras with normal magazines, but potential clearance issues may occur during magazine changes where the door could contact the telescopic column.
- Vertical magazines designed for handheld use of the 435 and 535 can function effectively as Steadicam magazines with superior balance characteristics compared to standard magazines.
- ARRI III Steadicam magazines are compatible with the 435 but are limited to a maximum frame rate of 120 fps.
- Using Steadicam magazines significantly reduces weight transfer problems during extended shots compared to standard 400-foot magazines.
- Rental availability of Steadicam-specific equipment and magazines varies greatly by region, with some areas having very limited access to proper low mode accessories.
Depends on
- Availability of proper Steadicam magazines and accessories is geographically dependent and may be severely limited in certain regions.
- Magazine changes can be physically difficult or problematic depending on which cage system is used.
- The 100% video top option incurs additional rental costs beyond standard equipment.
- Operators have varying comfort levels with flying film cameras inverted, requiring communication with the camera assistant before attempting this technique.
- Not all rental houses stock the full range of low mode equipment options.
