Tilt motor noise and unusual feel on Tiffen Volt after one year of use: encoder replacement, gimbal re-centering, and balance protocol.

What the thread found
- With motors off, the sled remains stable in all axes when properly balanced, ruling out purely mechanical issues.
- Pan-encoder replacement combined with trim reset (6 seconds) and the reset button beneath the Volt did not resolve the problem in one case.
- Another operator experienced similar tilt issues after one year; replacing the pan-encoder, cleaning the encoder-reading ring, and re-centering the gimbal resolved the fault; on-set temporary mitigation involved adding weight to the Volt counterweight.
- Recommended balance procedure: use very long fall time rather than neutral, balance at 45° on horizon and tilt axes so that no drift occurs with motors on, then recalibrate with the handle in the correct position for regular or goofy grip.
- Tiffen gimbals frequently fail the 180° test at very slow fall time, suggesting gimbal centering is a common issue.
- Reduce the distance between gimbal and lens during balancing to improve centering.
- Manufacturer support responds quickly; a dedicated Volt user group exists for peer troubleshooting.
Depends on
- Motor noise can stem from either electronics or gimbal centering, often both simultaneously.
- Resolution depends on whether the root cause is encoder wear, gimbal drift, or calibration drift.
