Payload capacity and suitability of the Steadicam® Axis kit (Volt, A30 arm) as a first rig for mid-range cinema cameras with accessories.
What the thread found
- A smaller arm cannot fly heavy setups, but camera configurations have become significantly lighter for most productions; one experienced operator flies a Mini LF with full remote controls and wireless transmission on an A30 arm mounted to an Archer.
- The advantages of the Axis kit outweigh occasional payload limitations compared to a much larger, heavier, and more expensive rig; for heavy jobs, a larger rig can be rented.
- Counterbalance weight does not require additional mass below the gimbal—it can be achieved by adjusting distance from the gimbal, such as using a longer post with less weight underneath.
- As a rule of thumb, if the arm carries approximately 30 lbs, the sled supplied with it should handle the same payload.
- Attending a workshop before purchase is strongly recommended to validate the rig choice for your intended work.
Depends on
- Payload depends on arm model and sled capacity.
- Camera package weight varies significantly by production type and accessories used.
- The A30 arm is not suitable for all heavy cinema camera setups without compromise.
