Using low mode brackets for stabilizing cameras on steadicam rigs during extended low-mode work

20 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • VLS low mode brackets add significant rigidity to camera mounts and reduce side-to-side shake compared to cages, allowing operators to focus on hand control during complex low-mode work
  • Image flipping in post or on the camera is an alternative to using low mode brackets when camera orientation preferences allow it
  • VLS low mode brackets are reported to be compatible with multiple 2/3" ENG-style video cameras including various Sony and Panasonic models
  • A homemade aluminum cage with dimensions extending from 250mm to 400mm high and rated for 30kg load is an option for low mode work when purpose-built brackets are unavailable
  • Camera department staff and some cinematographers prefer cameras to remain right-side-up during low-mode shooting to reduce confusion and simplify their work

Depends on

  • The VLS bracket manufacturer's exact compatibility list with all camera models was not fully specified; compatibility was confirmed with some models but remained uncertain for others like Genesis and Arri HD
  • Using a homemade cage required time-consuming design and fabrication with specialized aluminum-working skills
  • This discussion took place in 2006 and equipment availability or specifications may have changed since then
