SmallHD Ultra 7 as a sled monitor: image quality versus off-center mounting and weight distribution concerns

DisputedParticipants disagreed and reached no conclusion. Read the findings as positions, not as an answer.

What the thread found

  • One operator reports the Ultra 7 as their preferred monitor setup, citing good image quality and reliable 3-pin-to-2-pin Lemo power connection to the sled that remains secure; for heavy teleprompter builds, a fourth battery is sometimes mounted on the monitor rear.
  • Ports positioned on the underside enable cleaner sled wiring.
  • The Cine 7, which shares the Ultra 7 form factor without buttons, receives positive feedback.
  • Weight distribution with the Ultra 7 is less even than with the 703, and off-center mounting bothers some operators, particularly when the center of gravity shifts to one side.
  • The SmartSystem 7-inch offers high brightness and proven durability in rain and cold; its level function requires the separate Zen module, which some operators find oversized; pass-through power between two units is possible, and the level read accurately when reset each morning in cold conditions.
  • A 5-inch low-mode monitor can be mounted using a short threaded rod on an M1-Volt bracket, a 15-mm rod connector placed crosswise, a second short rod at the nose of the Volt box, and a standard 15-mm-to-1/4-20 monitor bracket.
  • Sourcing a 3-pin (0B)-to-2-pin Lemo cable presents difficulty.

Depends on

  • Performance difference most apparent in heavy builds and extreme cold.
  • Balance sensitivity depends on operator preference and rig configuration.
  • Zen module integration depends on monitor choice and available mounting space.
