Achieving balance and stability with a Steadicam Flyer rig using a lightweight camera

16 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • A Flyer with a lightweight camera like the HVX-200 will feel much more sensitive and responsive than a heavier rig because reduced mass decreases inertia and stability.
  • Dynamic balance is achievable with a Flyer and HVX-200 by removing external accessories affecting side-to-side balance, taping loose cables, keeping the monitor bracket horizontal, and filing grooves into the battery paddle mounting surfaces to prevent slipping.
  • To locate the camera center of gravity, use a fulcrum like a thick pen or screwdriver and position it slightly behind the center of the post, approximately three-quarters of an inch back from the centerpost.
  • Adding weight to the rig through accessories like wireless receivers, weight plates, or a low-mode bracket improves stability without requiring extensive modifications.
  • Using a shorter drop time around 1.5 to 2 seconds can make a lightweight Flyer feel more stable during operation.
  • Proper socket block adjustment with correct in-out and side-to-side threading significantly affects how the rig feels and performs.
  • Fine-tuning balance requires marking all weight and position adjustments with pencil or similar marking so the setup can be quickly recreated after changes.
  • Adding mass to the monitor or using multiple batteries can help balance the rig, though adding mass below the gimbal forces the gimbal lower on the post which is undesirable.

Depends on

  • Advice applies specifically to the Flyer model without a telescoping post.
  • The HVX-200 is explicitly mentioned as a lightweight camera; results may differ with other camera bodies.
  • Some suggestions about modifying the sled design are mentioned but not detailed.
  • One contributor mentions completely modifying the lower sled but provides no specific instructions.
