Placement and weight balancing of camera antlers on crane equipment
17 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- Positioning antlers directly above the center post provides significantly better balance and flexibility than placing them in front of or to the side.
- When antlers are centered over the post, the rig can be balanced without needing additional counterweight mounted elsewhere.
- Antler clamps slide along the lowmode plate, allowing fore and aft adjustment to optimize weight distribution.
- Antlers typically come with interchangeable weights, commonly including half-pound and one-pound discs per side.
- Front-heavy sled configurations may require extra counterweight even with proper antler placement if the post has been extended to maximum length.
- Antler placement affects the visual profile of the rig and can be rotated out of frame without disturbing balance when properly centered.
Depends on
- Experience described is from a specific wind condition and sled setup.
- The relationship between post extension length and required counterweight is mentioned but not quantified.
- Weight recommendations are anecdotal, with one participant noting one-pound weights seemed excessive for their use.
