Removing the arm stopper on Steadicam G-50 for improved handling and reduced noise

17 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • Removing the stopper that prevents the arm from rotating beyond 180 degrees outward improves handling in most situations and allows the arm to fold up more compactly when moving the rig sideways, making it easier to traverse the body.
  • Removing the stopper reduces clicking noise during running.
  • G-70 models have a built-in kickback mechanism that provides the mobility advantage without removing a stopper, but may still benefit from stopper removal for noise reduction.
  • The stopper can occasionally contact the vest or body during operation, but this is infrequent and not problematic.
  • Engaging the socket becomes slightly more difficult after stopper removal and requires practice to execute smoothly while wearing the vest.

Depends on

  • The stopper removal modification is specific to G-50 arm design and does not provide the same primary mobility benefit on G-70 models.
  • The practical impact varies depending on filming environment and body positioning during use.
