Passive exoskeleton support system for camera operators
18 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
DisputedParticipants disagreed and reached no conclusion. Read the findings as positions, not as an answer.
What the thread found
- A passive exoskeleton with rigid rods and hinges can only transfer load effectively when the joints remain in relatively straight alignment, and loses support function once joints bend.
- When knee joints bend during normal movement, the operator must support the full weight of the rig through muscle power rather than through the mechanical structure.
- Load distribution to the feet through the exoskeleton structure may reduce strain during static positions, but does not reduce the muscular effort required to lift the feet against gravity during movement.
- A harness positioned at the midriff rather than supported by shoulder straps places weight on a biomechanically weaker area of the body.
- Passive rod-and-hinge systems may provide modest load relief in static situations but do not substantially improve load carrying during dynamic movement compared to conventional harnesses.
- An active support system using motors or springs could provide meaningful weight reduction, but would require the operator to work against spring resistance or resistance forces during movement.
Depends on
- Discussion centered on a single video demonstration without controlled testing or measurement data.
- The effectiveness claims are contested between participants with different interpretations of how the system functions.
- Whether the demonstration camera was actually heavy or lightweight for its appearance remains unconfirmed and disputed.
- Specific load-carrying percentages mentioned are estimates rather than measured values.
