RED Drive RAID compatibility issues with gyroscopic stabilization systems on camera rigs

18 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • A RED camera with an onboard RED Drive experienced severe dropped frames and became unresponsive when two KS-6 gyros were mounted on a camera sled, despite being positioned three feet apart.
  • The issue appeared to be caused by resonance or vibration from the gyro system interfering with the RED Drive storage device.
  • Switching to CompactFlash cards resolved the dropped frames problem but required frequent card reloads during extended shoots.
  • A hard disk recorder mounted close to the same gyros continued functioning without issues, suggesting the problem was specific to the RED Drive hardware.
  • An isolated drive mount designed by Element Technica reportedly eliminated dropped frames when tested with RED cameras on both gyro-stabilized and servo-stabilized aerial gimbal systems.
  • The solution involved using a shock-isolated mount with relatively stiff rubber damping material that did not introduce noticeable high-frequency bounce to the camera rig.

Depends on

  • The specific software build version running on the RED camera at the time of the problem was not confirmed.
  • No resolution was reached on whether the Element Technica mount solution would perform the same way in handheld Steadicam applications versus aerial gimbal setups.
  • The exact cause of the RED Drive failure remains attributed to resonance but was not definitively diagnosed.
  • Only one user's direct experience with KS-6 gyros and RED Drive was documented; testing results from other operators were pending.
