Gyro stabilizers (Kenyon 4x4 vs. 6x6) on a Steadicam® sled for long live-show work with a 5 kg camera package.

What the thread found
- Gyro stabilizers are generally discouraged for live-show work because they add significant weight and produce high-pitched whistling noise; axis stabilization systems such as Steadicam® Volt, Wave, Omega AR, Letus Helix Pro, or Rock-a-bye are preferred alternatives.
- Gyros are best suited for fast hardmounts (vehicle, cart) and strong wind conditions where windscreen protection is not feasible.
- Gyro weight ratings (for example, 4x4 weighs approximately 3.9 kg) apply to direct camera mounting; on a Steadicam® rig, wind load determines the gyro size—a 4x4 suffices for normal breezes but proves insufficient in windy conditions such as a beach environment.
- A single Kenyon gyro (for example, KS-4 or KS-6) often provides adequate tilt stabilization when mounted at the rear battery position; a KS-6 mounted vertically in line with the post stabilizes both tilt and roll while permitting fast pan moves without reaching gyro limits.
- When using two KS-6 units, distribute the weight between top stage and foot post; a single 6x6 gyro mounted on the sled alone is considered too heavy for extended shooting periods.
Depends on
- Wind conditions and location (sheltered vs. exposed); payload and rig configuration; operator preference regarding acceptable weight and audible noise; whether tilt stabilization is critical for the production.
