Power supply options for Arri 435 camera and compatibility with different battery systems
19 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- The 435 and 435 ES models draw significant power and may refuse to start depending on battery capacity, while the 435 Advanced and later versions feature soft start technology that delays and softens the power spike during startup.
- Nicad batteries can be used as a 24-volt jumper to supplement primary power on the 435, reducing startup current draw issues.
- Starting the camera at 24fps and then switching to variable speed once the camera reaches operating speed can reduce initial power demand.
- The 235 camera is too light for aerial work and tends to catch wind, making it more difficult to control than heavier alternatives.
- The 235 requires specific accessory kit components that rental houses may not have in stock, and lacks onboard battery options at most facilities.
- Trimpac Nicad batteries weigh 2.75 pounds compared to Hytron batteries at 1.9 pounds, and can be charged with standard Anton Bauer chargers.
- On PRO II rigs without recent modifications, Trimpac batteries only fit in the auxiliary rear position without the onboard recorder mount, or require modification to fit lower battery positions.
- IDX batteries were reported to lock up and overheat when powering the 435 at 48fps, though they functioned at 24fps.
- Multiple battery options including Dionics, Hytrons, and Trimpacs have been used successfully with the 435, with choice depending on availability and specific shooting requirements.
- Block batteries can serve as an alternative power source for camera rigs in field situations away from standard charging infrastructure.
Depends on
- All testing and experience described occurred between 2007 and before, so battery technology and camera availability may have changed.
- Some modifications recommended are not officially endorsed by the manufacturer.
- Battery performance depends on freshness and charge state at the time of use.
- High frame rate shooting above 150fps creates more demanding power conditions than standard frame rates.
