Powering Preston follow focus systems with 12-volt camera rigs

20 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • Preston MDR-1 and MDR-2 motor drivers can operate on 12 volts within their specified voltage ranges.
  • The MDR-1 is rated for 10.5 to 30 volts DC, and the MDR-2 is rated for 10 to 48 volts DC.
  • Power can be extracted from an ARRI SR2 camera via a LEMO 4-pin connector with pin assignments of 1=ground, 2=+24v, 3=+12v.
  • A voltage converter part exists from the manufacturer for adapting between 12-volt and 24-volt systems, though its specific applications were unclear to some users.
  • Older UHF Preston motor drivers may have had different voltage requirements than the microwave-based models.

Depends on

  • The exact specifications and capabilities of pre-microwave era UHF Preston systems remain unclear in the discussion.
  • The specific use case and necessity of the voltage converter was not definitively established.
  • Discussion from 2006 may not reflect current equipment specifications.
