Powering gyroscopic stabilizers with onboard versus offboard power
14 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- Gyroscopic stabilizers can be powered either through an onboard battery with an inverter or through tethered offboard power.
- When wearing the stabilizer rig, distributing weight across a backpack inverter and batteries helps balance the load compared to mounting everything on the sled.
- Onboard gyroscopic power helps isolate the sled from movement caused by the operator or wind conditions.
- GPI made gold-mount inverters that fit directly onto certain rig configurations, though the company has stopped manufacturing them.
- Kenyon Labs produces smaller inverter boxes with 4-pin XLR input as an alternative to discontinued models, at lower cost but with fewer elegant mounting options.
Depends on
- The discussion is from 2012 and references products that may no longer be available or have been superseded.
- Specific model recommendations depend on the individual rig configuration and mounting preferences.
- GPI inverters were difficult to repair if damaged and replacement options were limited.
