Compatibility of Proaim 7000 arm with Steadicam and Klassen vests through socket block measurements
14 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- The Zephyr/Flyer male socket block pin measures approximately 1/2 inch (12.7mm) in diameter and roughly 1.65 inches (42.0mm) in length.
- The Flyer vest becomes uncomfortable when operating near the upper end of its payload range around 19 pounds of camera payload, which corresponds to approximately 25-28 pounds of total lift capacity.
- The Zephyr vest is significantly more comfortable than the Flyer vest for comparable operations.
- Tiffen advertises net camera capacity rather than total arm lift, and the stated lower weight limit of 2 pounds for Flyer arms is impractical without a weight plate, with realistic minimum net camera weight around 5 pounds.
- The Proaim 7000 arm resembles the Zephyr/Flyer design more closely than the G-series arm design.
- A Flycam system arm can potentially be adapted to work with a Tiffen vest through modifications such as milling the socket post or replacing it with appropriate parts.
Depends on
- Socket block measurements were taken with inexpensive calipers so accuracy may vary.
- Flycam system lift capacity specifications of 2 to 20 pounds are considered unreliable based on field experience.
- Socket compatibility requires careful mechanical adaptation and does not guarantee reliable performance.
- The Proaim 7000 arm specifications and rated lift capacity could not be independently verified in the discussion.
