Maximum camera weight capacity for the Steadicam Pilot and how to interpret the 10 lb payload specification
14 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
DisputedParticipants disagreed and reached no conclusion. Read the findings as positions, not as an answer.
What the thread found
- The Pilot is specified for cameras weighing 2 to 10 pounds according to Steadicam literature
- Tiffen's weight specification for the Pilot refers to the total camera payload weight, not just the camera body alone
- Weight added to the bottom of the sled beyond what Tiffen includes in their standard configuration counts toward the total payload limit
- Accessories mounted on the camera such as monitors, transmitters, and microphone receivers consume part of the available payload capacity
- When the payload limit is exceeded, the operator's arm must provide additional lift rather than relying on the rig's springs
- A heavier camera requires more counterbalance weight below the gimbal, which affects how much additional weight can be added to the bottom of the sled
- The Pilot specifications may be unclear about which components are included in the weight calculations
Depends on
- This discussion concerns a 2012-era Sony EX3 camera paired with a Pilot rig, which may not represent current equipment
- Participants disagreed about whether weights below the gimbal count toward the payload limit, leaving the specification interpretation unresolved
- Manufacturer documentation was noted as confusing and inconsistent compared to other Steadicam models
- The accuracy of Tiffen's specifications for individual setups with varying configurations and accessories was questioned
- The relationship between camera weight position above the gimbal and required counterweight balance was discussed theoretically but not conclusively tested
