Packing and organizing equipment in large transport cases for Steadicam systems
12 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- A single large case can hold a complete Steadicam sled setup including the arm, monitor, batteries, charger, docking bracket, and various tools and accessories while staying under 70 pounds
- Custom foam inserts can be created by purchasing sheets of foam, cutting them to size, and gluing them with spray adhesive to form compartments for specific equipment
- Pick-and-pluck foam can be reinforced by coating with Elmers glue followed by Plasti-dip spray to make it more durable and resistant to tearing
- Splitting equipment across two cases—one for the sled with electronics and one for the arm and accessories—allows a single operator to transport a complete system efficiently
- Pre-cut foam sheets can be obtained from foam suppliers and cut into custom pieces at low cost, then assembled at home with standard tools and spray adhesive
Depends on
- The Plasti-dip reinforcement method for pick-and-pluck foam was only recently tested and long-term durability was unconfirmed at time of posting
- Weight limits and packing efficiency depend on the specific case model and which accessories are included
- The feasibility of fitting an arm into a case depends on removing or repositioning certain components
