Modifications and improvements made to Steadicam PRO I sled configurations

14 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • The battery cage feet can act as protective crumple zones during crashes and should be retained for safety reasons.
  • A custom monitor mount based on 15mm lightweight rods can be constructed to allow flexible monitor positioning.
  • Installing a quick-release handle on the topstage enables tool-free adjustments during operation.
  • The PRO I sled achieves good weight distribution and dynamic balance capability with proper gimbal positioning.
  • A drop time of approximately two seconds is considered desirable for this rig type.
  • Keeping the battery cage feet on allows the sled to be safely set down when not being worn.
  • A custom baseplate can be designed to accommodate both Evolution battery base and 15mm lightweight rod base for different working configurations.
  • Monitor mount designs can support multiple attachment methods including Pro mount and 1/4 inch screw mounts depending on weight requirements.
  • The PRO I uses relatively lightweight batteries compared to other models, enabling the gimbal to be positioned higher up the post closer to the camera.
  • Rewiring the battery base to support both 12V and 24V switchable outputs eliminates the need for jumper systems.

Depends on

  • The thread focuses on one model (PRO I) and configurations from 2012, which may not apply to current hardware.
  • Several modifications remain described as works in progress and were never fully tested in the field.
  • Dynamic balance status in one photograph was uncertain as only straight-line pushing was performed during that shoot.
  • Budget constraints in some cases limited the ability to implement optimal solutions like specialized converters or rental equipment.
  • One custom rig was never sold or put into regular use, so its real-world performance advantages remain theoretical.
