Achieving ground-level low mode with ALEXA Mini and Cooke lenses on Steadicam® Archer 2 when sled foot feels too light.

What the thread found

  • Add weight to the foot using ballast such as small lead weights salvaged from Vinten pedestals, older heavy batteries around 2.7 kg, or battery extensions called Shark Fins, while reducing camera payload to focus motor and optional filters only.
  • Battery doublers offer an alternative to Shark Fins: rigid, hot-swap capable, no wider than a single battery, and position the second battery farther from the foot to increase ground-level stability.
  • Tilt batteries upward or use a third battery position; depending on operator height, the main post may reach sufficient ground clearance.
  • Mount a low-mode bracket with an extended post around 30 inches long and operate from the lower foot; this limits rapid whip pans.
  • When location permits, hard-mount the low-mode Steadicam® rig to a quad dolly or rickshaw for ground-level operation.

Depends on

  • Operator height affects feasibility of battery repositioning and post extension.
  • Set surface and location constraints determine whether dolly or rickshaw mounting is practical.
  • Quick pan movements are restricted with extended low-mode posts.
  • Camera payload must be minimized to light configuration.
