Technical differences between Archer 1 and Archer 2 steadicam rigs

16 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • The Archer 1 uses an older design with limited ability to achieve dynamic balance, while the Archer 2 features improved design for better balance adjustment.
  • The Archer 1 has a fixed monitor position that cannot be moved vertically or horizontally on the yoke, whereas the Archer 2 allows monitor repositioning.
  • The Archer 1 battery position is fixed and located too far back for most operators, requiring external weight additions to achieve dynamic balance.
  • The Archer 2 features a collapsible base for improved portability, which the Archer 1 does not have.
  • The Archer 2 comes in three configurations: standard with G-40 arm, S version with G-50 arm and single-axis motorized stage, and SE version with G-50 arm and dual-axis motorized stage.
  • The Archer 1 can handle SDI or Component HD video signals.
  • The Archer 2 battery can tilt and move in and out of the yoke, allowing better weight distribution for balance.
  • Neither Archer model includes a built-in artificial horizon.
  • The Archer 2 has been available only with the G-50 arm since NAB, with the G-40 configuration discontinued.

Depends on

  • One operator reports needing to add weight to the Archer 2 base to achieve sufficient mass for desired post length.
  • The information about video signal compatibility and current arm availability is based on sources that may have changed.
  • Specific power port differences between models are mentioned as possibility but not confirmed.
  • Balance modifications described represent individual solutions rather than factory specifications.
