Power supply considerations when using follow focus systems with RED cameras
16 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- RED cameras can shut down during follow focus operation when the follow focus system is powered from the camera's battery rather than from an independent sled power source
- Powering the follow focus system from a separate battery plate with its own D-tap connection prevents voltage drops that can cause camera shutdown
- Running the RED camera from its own dedicated battery while powering the follow focus from sled batteries eliminates power-related issues
- Powering additional accessories through the camera's accessory port can cause the camera to freeze or behave erratically
- Early RED camera models were more prone to power-related shutdowns than later versions
- Motor systems draw increased power when the lens ring is rotated to its mechanical stop, which can blow fuses if the fuse rating is insufficient
Depends on
- The exact mechanism of camera shutdown was not definitively determined in the discussion
- Reports of the issue were more common with older RED camera models and may not apply to newer versions
- The problem was observed primarily when using lower-charge batteries or specific battery types
- One participant mentioned the issue seemed to resolve when switching to Anton Bauer batteries, suggesting battery compatibility may be a factor
