Using a C stand for Steadicam balancing as an alternative to purpose-made brackets
What the thread found
- A C stand can be used for static balancing of a Steadicam by mounting the gimbal handle to the stand's end
- Dynamic balancing requires more clearance than a C stand provides between the stand and the rig
- When balancing on a C stand, position the Steadicam over the stand's long leg rather than between the legs to reduce tipping risk
- Adding a sandbag to the C stand improves stability during balancing
- Potential fitment issues include the baby pin not matching the gimbal handle and the sled colliding with the stand structure
- Using an offset arm or double header can help resolve baby pin positioning on lighter rigs
- A hard mount attached to a tripod or scaffolding provides sufficient space for dynamic balancing
Depends on
- Static balancing only; dynamic balancing cannot be performed with a C stand due to space constraints
- Baby pin compatibility and sled clearance depend on specific gimbal and rig configuration
- The advice assumes relatively lightweight builds
