Practical experience with Sony F23 camera on Steadicam rigs

19 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • The camera body weighs approximately 11 pounds and the recorder deck weighs 13 pounds, with combined power consumption around 120 watts at 10 amps constant
  • Back-mounted recorder placement is preferable to top-mounted to maintain proper center of gravity, requiring heavy lens counterbalance on the front
  • Camera outputs both HD and SD monitor signals, allowing use of standard SD monitors with the option of HD-SDI for better results
  • A Clipper 24 sled with G-50 arm at maximum extension can support the F23 with onboard recorder, 5mm Digi Prime lens, matte box, and accessories
  • Mounting the onboard recorder on the camera body creates balance challenges requiring the entire camera to be positioned forward on the sled, potentially conflicting with the recorder mounting area
  • Power delivery to the onboard recorder requires a multi-pin connector rather than the simpler 12-volt XLR used for camera-only operation
  • Steadicam operation with lightweight prime lenses produces poor balance that requires excessive forward camera positioning to achieve proper gimbal-to-post center of gravity relationship

Depends on

  • Experience based on workshop handling and single Steadicam test flight, not extensive field use
  • Battery runtime observations limited to controlled workshop environment
  • Forward camera positioning for balance may create physical conflicts depending on specific sled configuration
  • Recorder mounting options and processor attachment requirements vary depending on whether deck is mounted on body or remotely
  • Low-mode plate attachment points were noted as weak at time of discussion, though improvements were reportedly being made
