Flying the RED EPIC camera with anamorphic lenses on a camera sled
15 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- The EPIC is significantly lighter than anamorphic cinema lenses, requiring the camera to be offset toward the back of the sled for proper balance.
- The center balance point when using anamorphic lenses is typically around one-third of the lens length from the front.
- Additional mounting plates and accessories are needed to properly support and stabilize the EPIC on a sled system.
- A Preston remote start/stop cable for the EPIC requires an additional RED breakout cable adapter since the Preston cable ends with a female BNC connector.
- Loading the camera with accessories and adding weight is necessary to achieve proper sled handling and arm feel, as the bare EPIC is too light for stable operation.
- Firmware updates to the EPIC can enable new features such as playback and 720p SDI output.
- The EPIC can be powered by onboard batteries without a separate power cable when used on a sled.
- Panavision-supplied EPIC packages typically include necessary components for anamorphic lens operation.
Depends on
- The specific anamorphic lens package was not confirmed at the time of the inquiry.
- Firmware updates may have different availability depending on region.
- Earlier firmware versions lacked playback and image flipping features on the onboard monitor.
- The adapter solution for Preston remote start/stop requires manual fabrication.
