Compatibility between Varizoom wireless follow focus controller and Preston camera control systems

15 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • The Varizoom VZ-TOC-DX1-K is a rebranded wireless follow focus system originally designed by Ravensclaw, an Oregon-based remote control camera head manufacturer, and distributed through Varizoom
  • The Varizoom system uses the same motor connector standard as Preston equipment: a 7-pin Lemo shell size 1B with identical wiring to the MDR2, Scorpio, and C-Motion systems
  • Power connections on the Varizoom system use a 2-pin Lemo shell size 0B connector, which differs from Preston's standard and cannot be directly plugged into existing Preston power cables
  • Camera on/off control uses a 4-pin Lemo shell size 0S connector, which also differs from Preston systems and requires separate cabling
  • The Varizoom system can serve as a low-cost backup solution for users with existing Preston MDR2 motors and cables, though new power and camera control cables would need to be fabricated or purchased

Depends on

  • Information about the Varizoom product was limited and difficult to obtain at the time of discussion
  • The manufacturer did not clearly communicate compatibility specifications at industry trade shows
  • Run/stop and power cable compatibility requires custom fabrication work rather than direct connection
