Powering a Sony EX3 camera from a Flyer stabilizer rig's batteries
16 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- The EX3 can be powered from Flyer batteries despite the Flyer's nominal 14.5 volts being higher than the camera's 12 volt requirement, because the camera has integrated voltage regulation that accepts a range of voltages and converts them internally.
- Battery voltage drops as discharge occurs, and the EX3 requires a minimum of 12 volts to operate, though it draws more than 13 volts while recording.
- A cable adapter from the Flyer's 2-pin LEMO connector to a 4-pin XLR connector (available from equipment vendors) can connect to Sony EX3 power cables, which use an EIAJ-04 connector.
- Alternatively, a custom cable can be made by soldering an EIAJ-04 connector to a lead running from the Flyer's top stage power output.
- Using an Anton Bauer Multi-Tap between the Flyer and camera allows a single LEMO cable to power both the camera and additional accessories, reducing the number of cables needed.
- Removing the diopter snoot from the EX3 viewfinder before mounting on a Flyer is necessary to maintain proper dynamic balance on the rig.
- The Sony EX3 draws approximately 10 watts of power, so a fully charged battery set on a Flyer will provide extended runtime, with newer Anton Bauer Dionic 90 batteries maintaining above 13 volts until nearly depleted.
- A camera powered at voltages as low as 12.4 volts can continue operating during extended shoots.
Depends on
- The cable from Vortex Media's 4-pin XLR to Sony EX3 connector is longer than ideal for a Flyer and may require cutting.
- If Flyer batteries are old, their ability to maintain sufficient voltage may be compromised.
- Custom cable solutions require either professional fabrication or soldering skills.
- The EIAJ-04 connector availability may vary by location and vendor.
