Elbow joint banging in Steadicam arms during fast movements
21 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- Elbow joint knocking occurs in most Steadicam arm models during running and fast movements but not during walking
- The problem affects various arm types including the EFP, PRO, and Flyer models
- Holding the handle tighter during fast movements and relaxing it upon arrival can help manage the issue
- Installing larger diameter rubber bumpers than those supplied as standard can reduce the severity of knocking
- The G-70 arm design includes modifications that significantly reduce elbow joint impacts compared to earlier models
- The Baer-bel crossover arm design prevents this issue but upgrading existing arms with this design may not be practical
- Some arms like the Provid have stiffer elbow joints which may affect the problem differently
Depends on
- No definitive solution was identified that eliminates the problem completely
- Suggested modifications like replacing rubber bumpers with slimmer pads were not tested or validated in the discussion
- Information about whether Master and GEO arms have this issue was not conclusively addressed
- The specific design improvements in the G-70 arm that reduce knocking were not detailed
