Safety procedures and techniques for stepping on and off cranes while operating Steadicam
22 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- Always use a safety harness when on a crane, as the worst outcome is an additional take, but the alternative risks serious injury or death
- Rehearse the clip-on and clip-off sequence with grips in small increments, starting with the crane near ground level and gradually increasing height
- Use a seat with lumbar support pitched slightly forward to allow secure leaning while maintaining ability to enter and exit smoothly
- Coordinate step-offs with crane movement direction and ask actors to provide blocking justification for any hesitation or direction changes in the shot
- Have the grip release the safety cable with enough slack to allow movement but before reaching the edge, and use a ground spotter separate from the crane operator
- Incorporate a panning move at the transition point to provide additional time for the replacement operator to board and for safety procedures while maintaining shot flow
- Ensure the railings are at mid-back height to prevent overbalancing if needing to move backward quickly
- Place a docking bracket on the crane and use wind protection screening, as gyros are typically required to manage wind effects
- Hard crane landings with minimal deceleration are preferable, allowing the operator to begin stepping off while still a foot or two in the air
- Ensure the replacement operator is secured and ready before beginning the transition, and never rush the procedure despite producer or first assistant director pressure
Depends on
- Lightweight cranes limit platform size to approximately 4 by 4 feet, eliminating the option of having a riding grip for security
- Regulatory certification requirements for cranes may restrict step-on and step-off procedures in some jurisdictions
- Wind conditions can complicate the transition and require additional stabilization equipment
- One participant described moving around the platform during a shot as unsettling and something to be avoided when possible
