Short versus telescoping posts on M2 Steadicam® sleds: trade-offs in height range, stability, and operating flexibility.
DisputedParticipants disagreed and reached no conclusion. Read the findings as positions, not as an answer.
What the thread found
- Many operators prefer the short post on the M2 for its compact form, increased rigidity, reduced vibration, greater leg clearance, and easier navigation around obstacles.
- With gimbal arm geometry, the Volt arm often does not reach the top stage position anyway, so the extended height of a longer post may offer limited practical benefit.
- Longer or three-stage telescoping posts provide greater versatility for very low frame heights below the gimbal and for faster setup changes, particularly on narrative film productions.
- When using heavy production cameras and prime lenses, operators frequently extend the post regardless of its initial length, making the choice partly a wash.
- Operator height significantly influences the optimal post length; very tall or very short operators often benefit from a standard-length post rather than a short one.
- Alternative solutions include fixed carbon posts with extended D-brackets and repositionable battery placement, or custom builds with routed but non-permanently connected cabling for quick post swaps without breaking the circuit.
Depends on
- Choice depends on primary camera weight and lens package.
- Varies by production type: single-camera and documentary work versus narrative film.
- Influenced by operator stature.
- Gimbal arm model and reach capability affect practical top-stage utility.
