Choosing between Glidecam and Merlin stabilizers for the Panasonic HVX200 camera
19 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- The HVX200 is heavy for handheld stabilizer work, especially when accessories are added, and extended handheld use requires strong arms and causes fatigue.
- The original plastic Merlin gimbal can become loose over time when supporting a heavy camera like the HVX200.
- Upgrading to the Merlin arm and vest provides a metal gimbal with higher payload capacity, allowing some accessories to be mounted on the HVX200.
- The Merlin arm and vest combination enables low-mode balancing which is not possible with handheld Merlin use.
- When using the Merlin on an arm and vest, the maximum tilt angle is approximately 45 degrees up and down, not the 90-degree angles achievable with handheld operation.
- The Steadicam Flyer is an alternative option that can fly the HVX200 with accessories and allows low-mode operation.
- Evaluating stabilizer performance based on test videos is unreliable without knowing the operator's skill level.
Depends on
- Observations are from 2007 and refer to older equipment models.
- Recommendations about the Merlin plastic gimbal issue are based on individual user experience, not comprehensive testing.
- UK pricing information is outdated and specific to that region.
- No direct side-by-side comparison with footage examples between Glidecam and Merlin with the HVX200 was provided in the thread.
- One anecdotal report of successful Glidecam use with HVX200 does not establish definitive performance comparison.
