Using the Arri D-21 camera on steadicam rigs and with recording systems
18 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- The D-21 weighs approximately 32 pounds with a master prime lens, two Preston motors, clip-on matte box, and low mode bracket
- The camera can be used with fiber optic cable connections to a remote recording operator rather than requiring an onboard recorder
- Tethering the D-21 to a remote DIT using fiber optic cables allows the steadicam operator to disconnect from the recording setup when needed
- The camera runs continuously even between takes because the mirror must spin to transmit the video signal, which causes rapid battery drain
- The D-21 includes a low mode bracket in its standard package
- The S-TWO OB-1 onboard recorder weighs around 7 pounds
- The camera has standard Arri 2-pin power and 3-pin start/stop connectors
- SD video output is available directly on the camera body
- Using multiple thin BNC cables instead of one thick cable can reduce cable weight and handling issues on steadicam rigs
- The D-21 with fiber recording modules may feel heavier during use than expected, potentially due to the added weight of the fiber module itself
- A lightweight version works well for extended steadicam work when configured with careful attention to cable management
Depends on
- Weight assessments vary depending on lens choice and additional equipment configuration
- Some users experienced intermittent performance with Sony fiber blocks and switched to BNC cables instead
- Genesis cameras had cable length limitations for recording that were not present with the D-21
- One user's experience with a fiber module from a rental house differed from others, suggesting variable quality or configuration among suppliers
- The camera performs well on steadicam but cable management remains a constraint
