Choosing center post diameter for camera stabilizer sleds

Note (as of October 2026)Curt O. Schaller, the developer of Artemis and Trinity, has no longer been with ARRI since the end of 2025. To our knowledge, ARRI currently has no dedicated team and no official contact persons for its stabilizer systems. In our view, the future of this line is uncertain. If you are buying new, get written confirmation from ARRI beforehand on how long service and spare parts are guaranteed. Have used rigs checked by the manufacturer before you buy.

What the thread found

  • Center post stiffness depends on multiple factors including outer diameter, inner diameter, wall thickness, and material composition, not diameter alone.
  • A larger center post diameter generally increases stiffness but also increases weight of the entire system including gimbal, mounts, and clamps.
  • Monitor rod positioning changes with center post diameter: standard 15mm rods on 60mm centers cannot clear a 2 inch post, while 1.75 inch posts require wider 100mm center spacing which limits accessory compatibility.
  • Wider monitor rod spacing on larger center posts positions the rod closer to the operator's thighs, requiring the sled to be held further away from the body.
  • A 1.58 inch diameter carbon fiber center post is adequate for typical commercial television and advertising work with camera packages weighing 9 to 16 kilograms.
  • The feel and control of a sled depends primarily on gimbal diameter and knurling rather than center post diameter alone.
  • Aggressive or extended moves with long center posts benefit from larger diameter posts or tensioning cables to reduce flex.
  • System selection should balance gimbal feel, adequate post stiffness for intended work, weight, and space requirements rather than focusing on center post diameter in isolation.

Depends on

  • The discussion focuses on stabilizer sleds used in professional film and television production; applicability to other uses is unknown.
  • Most specific experience shared relates to Tiffen M-series, carbon fiber posts, and professional-grade camera packages; recommendations may not apply to lighter or heavier setups.
  • One participant mentions 30+ years of experience with 1.58 inch posts but does not specify all conditions or job types encountered.
  • The extent to which center post diameter matters depends on unmeasured variables such as specific move types, shooting environments, and individual operator technique.
