Archer 2 top stage camera locking mechanism plays loose on dovetail
12 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- The locking screw on the Archer 2 camera stage clamp can work itself loose over time, allowing the camera to slide despite the lock being engaged.
- Tightening the locking screw may resolve the issue temporarily but does not permanently fix an undersized dovetail plate.
- Applying non-permanent threadlocker compound to the locking screw threads can prevent it from coming loose.
- Adding a thin shim into the dovetail clamp mechanism creates a firmer grip by taking up tolerance space between the plate and stage.
- A thin layer of tape applied to the bottom surface of the dovetail plate can serve as a quick fix for an undersized plate.
- Machining a flat section on the locking lever can create a positive engagement point with increased clamping force and an audible click when locked.
- Tiffen may supply thicker shims as a factory solution to address the undersized plate issue.
Depends on
- This problem was reported on Archer 2 units from at least 2011 onwards, suggesting it may be a design limitation rather than a manufacturing defect.
- The effectiveness of tape shims versus machined shims versus factory parts has not been directly compared in the discussion.
- The flat-milling solution for the lever requires professional machine work and is not reversible.
