Balancing a Steadicam rig: step-by-step procedure and common issues
What the thread found
- Mount the camera on top of the center post and attach supplied weights to the bottom.
- Shorten the center post as much as possible, then hold the handle and tilt the post until it is parallel to the ground with the camera lens pointing downward.
- Slide the gimbal ring up or down the post until the camera remains level without tilting toward floor or ceiling.
- If the camera tilts toward the floor, move the gimbal upward toward the camera; if weights tilt toward the floor, move the gimbal downward.
- Extend the center post to increase bottom-heavy weight distribution if the gimbal cannot slide far enough, or remove weights if the setup becomes too bottom-heavy.
- Fine-tune the balance by tilting the post so the weights take approximately three seconds to drop and the post points at the ceiling when released.
- Balance side-to-side by adjusting the camera position left or right using the control knob on the top stage, or by moving the camera to a different mounting hole if available.
- Balance front-to-back by adjusting the dovetail plate position or repositioning the camera to a different mounting hole if needed.
