Choosing between a used Steadicam® Zephyr (23 lb payload) and a factory-refurbished Glidecam X-30 (32 lb payload) as an entry-level rig for RED Komodo and future heavier cameras.

What the thread found
- The Glidecam X-30 carries a higher payload (32 lb vs. 23 lb) and features a stiffer structure with fewer plastic components than the Zephyr.
- Older Glidecam models such as the V25 and X-20 have non-standard post tube dimensions; grips and Socket Blocks do not interchange without machine shop modification, and vests are not compatible between models without rework.
- The Glidecam X-30 upper electronics junction box can be mounted at the front or rear of the arm; a Noga arm mounted on the monitor can serve as a counterweight.
- Some operators report that Glidecam components are perceived as lower quality and less durable than Steadicam® systems, leading to a preference for Steadicam® rigs.
- One operator with experience on an older Glidecam noted good weight handling and gimbal performance but emphasized the difficulty of upgrading or mixing components with other manufacturers' systems.
- The best choice depends on hands-on testing: trying both rigs in person and selecting the one that feels and operates better is the primary recommendation.
Depends on
- Glidecam component compatibility varies significantly by model generation; the X-20 and X-30 are not directly interchangeable.
- Perceived quality differences between Glidecam and Steadicam® systems influence operator preference and long-term upgrade potential.
- RED Komodo weight and future camera payload requirements drive the choice between the two maximum load capacities.
