Steadicam® A-30 lower arm segment stiffness and squeaking after warranty service; bearing ring contact hypothesis.
What the thread found
- The lower arm segment on an A-30 Axis kit stopped isolating vertical movement effectively and now works only in tandem with the upper segment, causing bounce-back and jumping.
- Warranty service provided only temporary relief through lubrication; a loaner rig operated significantly smoother; the problem recurred within approximately one year.
- The operator observed that at all joints on this arm, the inner and outer bearing rings have equal thickness with no spacer or distance piece between rotating parts, causing the outer ring to contact the adjacent component and function as a plain bearing with corresponding friction.
- By contrast, the less expensive Glidecam X-10 arm cleanly separates the inner ring (fixed to one component) from the outer ring (in the rotating component), allowing the bearings to function as designed.
- The observation is owner-reported and not confirmed by a Steadicam® technician.
Depends on
- Hypothesis is based on visual inspection, not bearing measurement or load testing.
- Recurrence after one year may depend on operating intensity and environmental conditions.
- Warranty service documentation and Steadicam® design specifications were not consulted.
