Methods for configuring an Actioncam steadicam rig for low-mode operation with a Red camera
17 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- Low-mode can be achieved by flipping the arm post down and using a screw in the gimbal handle to mount the camera upside down and clamp it to the post, though this method reportedly does not work well compared to using a traditional F bracket.
- A pistol grip mount can be fitted into the top front rod mounts with a thread that accepts a snap plate, allowing the battery mount and pistol grip to be positioned so the plate remains centered and balanced above the camera.
- An alternative approach is to flip the entire rig upside down and re-adjust the balance, then flip the footage back in post-production rather than physically remounting the camera, which saves significant setup time on set.
- Tilting low-mode cages designed specifically for this purpose are available and can be used for low-mode shots.
- When shooting in low-mode with the rig flipped and image reversed in post, setup time can be reduced from approximately ten minutes to thirty seconds.
Depends on
- The screw-based mounting method mentioned for low-mode is reported to work poorly in practice.
- Opinions on the best approach vary, and the manual flip-and-reverse method in post-production was presented as one option among several rather than as a proven standard.
- Experience described is limited; one participant had only flown a camera in low-mode once and did not document it photographically.
- The discussion references an older Actioncam model and specific experience may not apply to all versions.
- Manufacturer support information for this specific feature was noted as limited or unavailable on the company website at the time of the discussion.
