Practical advice for a new Steadicam operator beginning their first feature film

20 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • A Steadicam operator should focus on their primary role and avoid offering unsolicited creative suggestions about lighting or camera placement, though they should quietly alert the DP to potential technical issues like shadows that affect framing.
  • Preparation before shooting begins, including visiting pre-production to set up and test the rig with marked positions, helps ensure quick setup times on set and prevents the crew from waiting.
  • Maintaining a positive attitude even during difficult production days shows in the work and helps avoid spreading negativity on set.
  • Transitions between Steadicam and sticks should be optimized for speed, particularly when transitioning to handheld camera, to encourage directors and DPs to use Steadicam when needed rather than defaulting to other camera methods.
  • Before rehearsals begin, the operator should walk through and clear the shot path of obstructive equipment, lens flares, shadows, and boom issues in coordination with other departments.
  • Watching all rehearsals, even those not involving Steadicam, keeps the operator mentally prepared for last-minute directorial changes that may require Steadicam.
  • During lighting, conducting one or two rehearsals with second team builds muscle memory so that when first team arrives, the operator has practiced the shot multiple times.
  • HD camera bodies have longer physical length and slower inertia than film bodies, requiring the operator to anticipate and adjust pans and quick movements accordingly.
  • Coordinating with the first AC during pre-production ensures all necessary Steadicam accessories, follow focus systems, and monitoring equipment are available on set.
  • Mental confidence and positive self-talk before takes improve execution, whereas doubt and worry tend to produce poor results.
  • A snap plate adapter allows quick transitions between Steadicam and a camera head without removing the dovetail, significantly reducing changeover time.

Depends on

  • Snap plates should not be used for insert car shots or situations with vibration on a head.
  • The advice assumes productions with either one or two camera bodies and standard feature film workflows.
  • Some recommendations were based on film or super16 shooting; applicability to HD and digital shoots may vary.
