Power connectors and cable requirements for Panavised and stock Sony F35 cameras on Steadicam rigs

17 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • The Panavised F35 uses a 3-pin Fischer Arri remote start/stop connector, the same as Arri 235, 435, and 535 cameras.
  • Stock Sony F35 cameras have the same power connector as the Genesis and F23 cameras.
  • The F35 is fundamentally a 12-volt system; when 24 volts are supplied, only the 3-pin Fischer connector receives 24 volts while all other components operate on 12 volts.
  • Remote start function on the F35 operates independently of camera power supply, so it continues to work even when the camera receives only 12 volts.
  • F35 cameras with an SRW-1 recorder draw approximately 11 amps, exceeding the 7-amp rating of PRO Lemo connectors, creating risk of cable damage.
  • Y-cable power configurations distribute current draw across multiple battery supplies and thicker wire paths to prevent overheating of undersized post cables.
  • The MK-V battery base does not supply auxiliary power to PRO topstage connectors despite compatibility claims, requiring alternative wiring solutions.

Depends on

  • Panavision has made unknown modifications to some F35 units that may affect power behavior.
  • Reports exist of 24-volt port functionality being disabled in 12-volt-only Steadicam mode, though the cause and frequency remain unclear.
  • The MK-V post cable uses 22 AWG wire, which is undersized for the current draw of F23, F35, and Genesis cameras.
  • Information reflects practices from 2009 and may not apply to current equipment configurations.
  • Compatibility between Y-cable designs for Genesis and stock F35 was disputed in the thread without final resolution.
