Weight capacity and load-carrying capabilities of Archer and Clipper steadicam rigs
18 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- The Archer has a specified weight limit of 23 pounds but can be pushed beyond this, with users reporting loads up to 16 kilograms without gimbal problems.
- The Clipper steadicam rig is designed to handle heavier loads than the Archer, with a top stage rated for 35 pounds or more.
- When consistently flying loads of 18 kilograms or heavier, choosing a rig specifically designed for that weight range is preferable to pushing a lighter rig beyond its specifications.
- Adding bottom weight is necessary to balance the rig when using heavier camera packages, as the post extension has limits.
- Overloading a rig beyond manufacturer specifications may result in insurance claim rejection if equipment damage occurs.
- The Clipper 324 model is switchable between 12-volt and 24-volt power and is designed to fly HD ENG cameras and lightweight 35mm configurations.
- The Clipper top stage is narrower than the Ultra model, which limits the footprint available for heavier camera rigs.
- When using a G-70 arm with the Clipper instead of the standard G-50, greater weight capacity can be achieved.
Depends on
- Discussion dates to 2008 and may not reflect current equipment specifications.
- Weight-carrying experience reported is anecdotal rather than systematically tested.
- The Clipper 2 mentioned as used equipment availability was location-specific at time of posting.
- Specific insurance claim rejection scenario is theoretical rather than documented case.
