RED camera video distortion when transmitted wirelessly through Decimator and Modulus systems

15 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • RED One cameras produce image distortion on wireless video transmission when connected through a Decimator converter to a Modulus transmitter, while SD output cameras do not exhibit this problem over the same wireless link
  • The distortion appears as a visible bend or shift roughly one-fifth down from the top of the frame, with the overall image appearing misaligned on the receiving monitor
  • The issue persists across multiple Decimator units (both generation 1 and 2), multiple Modulus transmitters (2000 and 3000 models), and various receiving monitors from different manufacturers
  • Distortion was observed to follow wireless channel changes and appears distinct from typical RF interference
  • Video distribution amplifiers can improve signal quality to wireless transmitters by providing properly regulated video signal levels
  • A BNC terminator placed on unused BNC connectors of the wireless transmitter may help resolve signal quality issues
  • Direct wiring of the Decimator output to an SD monitor should be tested to isolate whether the problem originates in the converter, wireless transmitter, or wireless receiver

Depends on

  • The reporter did not provide photographs of the actual distortion
  • Testing with multiple RED camera bodies was performed on actual jobs rather than in a controlled laboratory environment
  • Not all troubleshooting suggestions mentioned were confirmed as completed
  • The specific configuration of DIP switches on the Decimator that might resolve the issue was not definitively identified
