Marshall monitor options for Steadicam and other production use

15 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • A monitor with HD-SDI and 3G capability is preferable to one with only HDMI, as HDMI signals become problematic when routing outside the camera post during Steadicam work.
  • The Marshall 651STX features a metal casing, composite inputs, transflective display technology at 800 nits brightness, and weighs approximately 1.3 pounds, making it suitable for daylight shooting and smaller rig configurations.
  • Newer Marshall plastic-bodied monitors lack composite inputs and transflective technology compared to the 651STX, which may limit their usefulness as dedicated Steadicam monitors despite higher brightness ratings.
  • Image flip capability for low-mode shooting requires either manual monitor repositioning or external devices like a nanoFlash converter when not built into the monitor.
  • HDMI cables can be routed outside the camera post using routing techniques such as splitting the video feed and running cables across the back of the monitor, avoiding the need for additional interface boxes.
  • A 6.5-inch 4:3 aspect ratio monitor displays a smaller actual screen area when shooting 16:9 footage compared to a 7-inch monitor, which some operators prefer for easier image scanning.

Depends on

  • The discussion references monitors available around 2011 and may not reflect current product features.
  • Weight specifications for the new Marshall monitors discussed were not available at the time of the discussion.
  • The comparison assumes specific Steadicam rig types such as the Zephyr, which may have different requirements than other configurations.
  • One user's characterization of cheaper Marshall monitors as rebadged Chinese products is anecdotal without manufacturer confirmation.
